Q: In the Body-For-LIFE Challenge you only have to do 20 minutes of intense cardio 3 times per week. Do you agree with that?
A: The Body-For-LIFE program is a really great program but it's a one size fits all approach. A person that's already very lean and wants to build muscle may not need any cardio. That is for their goal of building muscle. A person that is 50 pounds or more overweight will need to take a different approach.
I recommend interval training; a combination of high and moderate intensity cardio. Look at the results you are getting and that should determine how much cardio you should do.
If a person is extremely overweight they should always start out with cardio at a moderate level of intensity until their body can adapt to the increased demands placed upon it.
A person that's very overweight may also need to do cardio 5-6 times a week. On page 50 of God's Temple-40 Days to Total Transormation, I talk about the benefits of exercise.
Q: When is the best time to exercise; first thing in the morning or at night?
A: Either. It depends on your schedule and when you have the most energy to dedicate to your workouts. Personally, I like morning workouts the best but, I'm a morning person. If you workout the first thing in the morning you also jump start your metabolism.
Sometimes we have the best of intentions to get our workout done in the evening but then...life happens. The kids need us, we have an unexpected meeting or, we're just plain tired by the end of the day.
Regardless when you workout, schedule it and do it. You are just as important as everything else in your day and if you feel good, you perform well and have the energy you need to carry on with your busy schedule day to day.
Q: I read your interview on CBN and you talk about positive power statements. What exactly is that?
A: Positive Power Statements are affirmations that get you juiced and keep you in that state. In God's Temple 40 Days to Total Transformation I give you a PPS (Positive Power Statement) for each day which corresponds with the lesson for the day or, you can choose your own. Speaking the PPS out loud puts us in a state of believing that all things are possible and you know that with God, they are. My personal affirmation is; I'm lean, fit, healthy, strong. I am God's Temple, yes!
There are days when I don't feel I have the energy I need to get through a workout and I will speak scripture out loud....I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Try it..it really works and you are speaking your goals or scripture at the same time. It reinforces whatever you are doing.
Q: I only have 30 minutes a day to exercise. What do you recommend I do?
A: Without knowing you personally or knowing what your goals are, I would say circuit training. It's a way to get in your cardio and strength training at the same time. It's a way to maximize your time and effort.
Let's just assume you have very limited or no workout equipment. The goal is to keep moving through your workout. Push ups (on your toes or knees) work the chest, shoulders and triceps. Squats or lunges work the quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings. Most anytime you are pulling something toward you (with resistance) you are working back and biceps. With your own two feet you can walk, march in place, do knee lifts or step up on a step. Don't forget your core (abs and back). Plank pose is an awesome way to work core.
With minimal equipment; (stability ball, dumbbells, and resistance bands) you have added countless more exercises. The idea is to keep moving. Your own body weight can provide the resistance you need.
Q: I know I need to eat healthier but I just don't have time to cook. Do you have any suggestions?
A: Of course I do! The first thing that I would have to say is, preparation is key to being successful. It also takes the dedication to stick with it.
We wouldn't go into a meeting unprepared so why do we go through life not preparing ourselves? You and your health are important, right?
Here's a tip: On the weekend or whenever it is that you have a little extra time, prepare more food than you need and package it in those handy little containers, place it in the freezer, and you grab one each day for your lunch.
You can also cut up vegetables (baby carrots, celergy, zucchini, radishes, etc) and package so that when you get the urge to snack on something, you can grab a bag of mixed vegetables. Hey, go wild and throw a few olives in there as well. Almonds are great too but, moderation when it comes to nuts.
For dinner: Honestly, it doesn't take too long to broil a chicken breast, make some brown rice, grab a bag of salad and throw some of those vegetables you have already cut up on top. Twenty minutes tops. It takes longer than that to drive to a restaurant, wait for the food, and drive back home.
Get the rest of the family involved as well. Getting your children involved is a great way to teach them life long healthy habits and also gives them a sense of responsibility. Good health should be a priority for all of us. Everyone is going to feel better as well. It's a win-win approach.
Q: I saw your "former fat girl" pictures on your web page. How did you get fit?
A: With the same principles I list in God's Temple-40 Days to Total Transformation.
Q: You have a lot of men's pictures on your website. Do this program work for women also?
A: Sure it does. I've been working with the military for the past 19 months in Iraq and these are my most recent photos of clients. Could you be my next star?
Q: I'm interested in your coaching services but your website says you are working in Iraq. When will your coaching program begin again?
A: I will redeploy to the states in December of 08 and anxious to get back to work with coaching state side.
